Catalogue excerpt:
“  WAAP is pleased to participate in the 2022 iteration of NADA House (Governors Island, NYC) exhibition with new work by Liljana Mead Martin. Encompassing an intimate nook of the House, Mead Martin’s sculptural works explore connections between embodiment, material, and geography, while maintaining an interest in choreographic processes and ecological concerns.

Martin’s sculptures cast human forms, ears and fingertips, mimicking fungal and floral life through surreal fluorescent petal-like biorubber. Burnt wood bases ground the works ecologically. Host to the hybrid floral and fungal shapes, the works consider how humans may underestimate our environmental relationships. If terraforming is the process of making earth habitable for humans, Martin proposes an opposite action: remaking humanness in order to accommodate the hypersensitive world.

Positioning Electric Preyer in the decaying NADA House brings new life and regrowth, a way for human-intervened-nature to reclaim space.”
